Catering kitchen started

Facade Glass Panels

Crystal Glass has attached about two-thirds of the black glass panels on the front of the Bailey.

The plumber is just one of the trades now in the building.

The heating, plumbing, electrical and sprinkler system trades are now all jockeying for space to run their services in the building.

The blue pipe is the waterline coming into the basement of the Bailey Theatre annex. It will feed the fire sprinkler system and domestic waterlines.

Steel makes it stronger

Reinforcing steel plates have been added to the underside of the balcony. The extra strength is required because bars are to be added to the front of the balcony for hanging some of the theatre lighting.

Insulating back wall

Blue coloured peel and stick vapour barriers is covered with two layers of insulation on the upper portion of the theatre's back wall.

The next step will be to cover the insulation with metal panels.

Ted and George from Crystal Glass caulk the joints on the first glass panels to be installed on the front of the Bailey.

There will be 240 pieces of black glass on the facade.

Crystal Glass has started installing black glass panels that will cover the lower faade of the Bailey Theatre. Ross Shuman inspects the glass work and the new aluminum window frames. The frames open for the display of posters for upcoming events.

New Year's Tickets Selling Fast

Tickets for the Bailey Theatre's New Years Eve event have been on sale for only a short period of time, and already they are half sold.
The evening features the XTATIX with the Joel Gray Horns. If you attended the Black n White fundraiser for the Bailey you'll remember the Joel Gray Quartet provied the dinner music.
The XTATIX were a huge draw and we had a waiting list for people who were not fast enough getting their tickets.

St. Marc sur Richelieu

Today we visited the church in St. Marc sur Richelieu, Quebec where Bailey Theatre builder Camille David and his second wife Corine Beaudry were married. Soon after they moved to their ranch at Ferry Creek southeast of Camrose.

Marquee Removed

The crew from Read's Contracting successfully removes the lower portion of the marquee. It had been CO2 (dry ice) blasted to remove old paint. Now repairs can be made in a sheet metal shop.

INVESTMENTS IN BAILEY

Federal funding of $2,220,250 is being provided through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The Government of Alberta is providing $250,000 through the Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) and $45,000 through the Alberta Main Street Program for the final phase of restoration. The total restoration cost for the final phase is expected to be $4,440,500, which includes significant funding support from private donors.

Cleaning the Marquee

Work has started to restore the marquee on the front of the theatre.

The first step is CO2 blasting the metal panels. Using dryice (frozen carbon dioxide) is less abrasive than sand blasting.

A mason starts the last row of concrete block on the south wall of the addition. The north wall is more than three-quarters completed.

The rear and internal block walls should be completed before the city begins work to upgrade and re-pave the alley later this month.

Design Committee Tour

Excavation of the basement of the addition to the theatre has started.

The addition will have a loading dock on the back, freight elevator between the basement and the main floor, and the heating and ventilation equipment on the roof.

Rehearsal Hall

The walls of the rehearsal hall under the south annex have been framed.

The hall is in the basement of a separate building from the auditorium so rehearsals can be held while performances are taking place on the stage. The hall can also be rented as a meeting room.

There will be a tv monitor in the room so performers can see what is taking place on the stage via a camera mounted on the front of the balcony.

Also orchestras for musicals can be in the hall with the sound running to the control booth to better control sound levels for the audience.

New Stage Roof

Details are worked out on sealing the joint between the auditorium roof and the stage roof as workers put new roofing material over the stage roof.

The square box on the roof is the frame for one of the two smoke hatches over the stage. The hatches open automatically to vent smoke from the theatre.

Aluminum Window Frames

Architect David Roth checks the first of ten aluminum window frames custom manufactured by Pioneer Machine and Crane of Camrose.

The frames are for the new windows to be installed on the front of the Bailey Theatre.

Once the frames are in place measurements can be taken for the black glass panels which will cover the lower portion of the building.

New Floor

After several months of excavation and structural work in the theatre bassement a new floor has now been poured.

It took a crew from Ken's Concrete Services about three hours to pour and finish the new floor for the dressing rooms, green rooms, washrooms and huge storage area for tables, chairs, props, light and sound equipment.

The new metal roof for the raised portion of the theatre is nearly complete.

The roof over the stage was altered slightly to allow for the installation of a steel structure to support a motorized rigging sytem for the fly gallery.

And tomorrow concrete will be poured for the 3,000 sq. ft. basement floor.

The City of Camrose has committed $500,000 towards the restoration of the Bailey.

The first cheque for $250,000 was presented today.

The remaining $250,000 from the City will be presented when the project is 90-percent completed.

Brad (the plumber) is finishing up the plumbing runs through the basement of the theatre.

In the next few weeks the general contractor will prepare the basement for a new concrete slab. Most of the workm in the theatre since October has taken place in the basement where new concrete footings, foundations and walls have already been poured.

As the masons complete repairs to the top of the brick wall on the north side of the stage, other construction workers are putting up the studs for the new wall above the brick at the back of the stage.

Masons are working on the alley side of the theatre cleaning and re-bricking the top of the back wall of the auditorium.

Also construction workers are framing the spaces for the smoke hatches over the stage which are required by the building code.

A steel structure is being installed in the theatre to support the new (motorized) rigging system and light bars over the stage.

Here a crane loads one of the cross braces for the structure into the building through the roof over the stage.

The fly gallery will be used to raise and lower pieces of scenery.

An elaborate scaffold has been built on the stage so that workers can remove the roof over the stage.

Later this week a crane will lower steel beams and posts in to the theatre.

The steel structure is to support a motorized rigging system for raising and lowering scenery and light bars.

A new roof then goes over the stage.

Uncovered Posters

While working on the stairs to the balcony workers uncovered a 1920s poster for "California Movie Girls" featuring comedian Paul Robinson.

The poster is on top of several layers of posters of what was once the front wall of the theatre.

The theatre was called the David Theatre at the time after the first owner, Camille David.

Bailey Receives CFEP Grant

This is the third grant the Bailey has received from this program. The grant has to be matched with money received from donors.

Little Known of Lobby Mural Painter

Paint conservator Cyndie Lack inspects the mural uncovered in the lobby during renovations. The painting by Denmark born painter Theodore Jensen is of a person sitting in a boat on a lake in the mountains shooting at ducks.

Cyndie says this is an excellent piece and is in good shape. The varnish has yellowed and the impact has been to change the colours of primarily the sky and water. The varnish can be removed and small holes caused by nails be filled and repainted.

Plans are to preserve the painting for display when the theatre re-opens.

At the Augustana Spring Student Conference Lauren Tollifson presented a paper on the builder of the Bailey Theatre Camille David.

Tollifson explored the official records and local history books for evidence to support the obituary that appeared in Montreal and Franco-Alberta newspapers after David died in 1930.

Construction workers working on the balcony have uncovered a treasure trove of old candy wrappers, boxes and cardboard chocolate milk bottle and ice cream lids.

On the side of the Jones' Cremola Toffee box is written, "Just cream, butter & sugar".

There is a 10-cent ticket stub for a dance featuring the "Silver Troubadors".

During the excavation of the basement construction workers found more artifacts.

In the foreground are left to right, a tin for Macdonald's tobacco, a tin for denture powder, a broken bottle for Hudson's Bay whiskey, and a small flask. The flask has been dated at between 60 and 80 years old, and yes that is a little bit of whiskey in the bottle.

Work has started to connect the "old" portion of the theatre to the new southside building which will house the loading dock, the freight elevator and have the new heating ventilation and air conditioning units on the roof.

The basement connection will give access to the storage areas in the basement under the auditorium.

Just came from the weekly site meeting with the contractor. They are getting ready to pour concrete on Friday to complete most of the foundation upgrade.
